Community EducationCommunity Education deals with the educational needs of Mental Health Center employees and the community. Internally, education is an ongoing process to maintain employee readiness and to meet licensure and certification criteria. Externally, Mental Health Center staff members are available to share their knowledge on mental health subjects with the community through scheduled speaking engagements in schools, churches, civic groups and businesses. Training is available to law enforcement personnel, volunteers, nurses and other community caregivers to assist them in dealing more effectively with persons with emotional problems. Educational programs and assistance are also available to other agencies, courts and jails in promoting mental health practices and concepts.
Recently, the MHC added Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training to the programs offered to the community. MHFA is a public education course designed to present an overview of mental illnesses and substance use disorders and to introduce participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems as well as a a 5-Step Action Plan to use in helping an individual in crisis.
Call the Community Education Director to schedule a speaker or training or to learn more about MHFA at 256-705-6379 or e-mail at rita.limbaugh@mhcmc.org.
